Peek At The Week

Here's a peek at our week....

In Math:

  • continued learning about geometry
  • identified solid figures by their facts or flat surfaces, edges, and vertices
  • students identified the plane shapes that form the flat surfaces of solid figures
  • students drew polygons (triangles, quadrilaterals, and hexagons) and listed their attributes
  • new vocabulary:
    • sphere, pyramid, cylinder, cone, cube, rectangular prism, solid figure, flat surface, face, edge, vertex (vertices), plane shape; circle, square, triangle, rectangle, sides, angles, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, polygon
  • made shape books to practice their shapes
  • read The Greedy Triangle
  • used patten blocks to make other shapes
  • played a shape muncher game for solid and plane shapes
In Science:
  • read 2 Dr. Seuss insect books
  • read a BUGS! packet to answer questions
  • created a butterfly life cycle plate to learn the four stages of the complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, adult
  • watched a butterfly and moth video and wrote facts
  • began making our electronic insect book in Book Creator
  • practiced Building a Bug 
  • did a Butterfly Scavenger Hunt with our 5th grade buddies
In ELA
  • continued to work out sounds of /ou/ and /ow
  • took unit 14 fundations test
  • read a folktaleThe Lad Who Went to The North Wind
  • practiced the 5 Ws, summarizing and sequencing the events

Peek At The Week

I hope you had a nice long weekend! We had another fast week and accomplished a lot!

Here’s a Peek at our week:

In Math:
  • Practiced regrouping with subtraction
  • Used clues to solve riddle problems
  • Played math games with adding 3 digit numbers
  • Took our Topic 11 test
  • Began Topic 12 on Geometry, read a story, and played a game looking for solid shapes (3-D)

In ELA:
  • Started unit 14 fundations unit
  • Reviewed the /ou/ sound of ou and ow
  • Trick word practice with gel boards and relay game
  • played charades using words that made the /ou/ sound (example, mouse, found, trout, house, pound)
  • reviewed noun and tower for vocabulary
  • reading groups read The Three Wishes and Edgar Badger’s Balloon Day
In Science:
  • Reviewed for the weather test by playing Jeopardy
  • Took our weather test (They did great!)
  • Mr. Muscleman came and used an infrared camera to discuss heat energy and temperature.
  • Began our new unit on insects
  • Read Bugs Are Insects  and learned special characteristics
  • Watched a Brain pop Jr video on insects
  • Watched All About Bugs video and created a What is an Insect? booklet

Mrs. Weldon came in and helped us begin researching an insect to make a book on the iPads using Book Creator. We will work on the books next week.

Weather Test on Tuesday!

Peek At The Week

It’s good to see the snow melting away! We are looking forward to warmer weather! I can’t believe March is almost over! I hope I'll see many of you at the Toast to Memorial on Saturday!


Here's a peek at our week....
In Math:
  • Began adding 3 digit numbers breaking numbers apart with hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Added 3 digit numbers to hundreds using mental math
  • Used place value blocks to add 3 digit numbers with partners
  • Used paper and pencil to add 3 digit numbers
  • Began exploring subtraction with 3 digit numbers
In Science:
  • Learned about the 3 main groups of clouds- cirrus cumulus, stratus
  • Made a cloud book, sang a cloud song, did a cloud watch each morning, and watched a science video on wind and clouds
  • Learned about 4 types of precipitation- rain, snow, sleet, and hail and made a small booklet
  • Watched a movie all about precipitation
  • Learned about 4 severe storms- blizzards, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes
  • Did a fun “Weather Wizard” activity and made a storm recipe book
  • With our 5th grade buddies we did a weather scavenger hunt in the classroom for information
In ELA:
  • Began Unit 13 for the sounds of long o- oe, oa, ow, o, o-e
  • Practiced trick words through gel boards and TWINGO
  • Discussed vocabulary words coach and flow
  • Reading groups read Edgar Badger’s Balloon Day and The Three Wishes
  • We practiced answering questions, writing 5 W questions, and summarizing

Peek At The Week

Happy Spring! We had another great week! March is flying by!
Please remember to return your child’s report card folder if you haven’t already! Let’s hope for nicer weather soon!

Here's a peek at our week....
In Math:
  • Compared 3 digit numbers using greater than and less than
  • Ordered numbers using greater than and less than
  • Identified number patterns in hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Completed our Topic 10 test
  • Began Topic 11 on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers
  • Listened to a math story and played a 3 digit treasure math game with a partner
In Science:
  • Began learning about weather
  • Learned that weather is made up of sun, air, water (SAW)
  • Learned about the water cycle through reading, a song, a short video, and making a water cycle wheel
  • Named the 3 parts of the water cycle which are: evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
In Writing:
  • All students completed their individual continent reports! They came out very well and you can look for them today!
  • Had a round robin reading session to look at everyones reports and make a positive comment. They loved this!
In ELA:
  • Practiced words with oi, oy
  • Practiced trick words
  • Learned words spoil and destroy
  • Played Desk Pop
  • Took our Unit 12 test
  • Groups switched books and read some nonfiction about Dolphins and Crocodiles and Lizards. They love learning new information about animals and discussing text features!
  • They also researched their own animal on the iPad, wrote 3 facts, and drew pictures.

Peek At The Week

We had another great week!

Thank you to all the parents who brought in things for the Kitchen Gadgets basket! It is looking awesome!

Here's a look at our week....
In Math:
  • Identified and recorded 3-digit numbers in expanded form (200 + 30 + 1), standard form (231), and number word form (two hundred thirty-one)
  • Added and subtracted multiples of 10 or 100 to and from a 3-digit number without regrouping
  • Students found, identified and applied number patterns to numbers on a hundred chart
  • Used skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 100s up to 1,000 -We even skipped around the room! :)
  • Made a place value kite craft
  • Played Close to 20
In Writing:
  • Students edited their continent reports in order to prepare for publishing, focusing on using correct punctuation and spelling
  • Began to transfer their edited work to publishing paper, organizing it under appropriate headings as they go
  • Created pictures with labels and added captions
  • Made an “All About the Author” page too
Many students are finished and they are looking great!
We also interviewed a classmate and wrote descriptive paragraphs about them. We learned a lot!
In ELA:

  • Practiced more words with 2 syllables  in Unit 11 for long e
  • Practiced trick words
  • Took Unit 11 test
  • Groups read some nonfiction about Dolphins and Crocodiles and Lizards. They love learning new information about animals and discussing text features!

Peek At The Week

What a fast week! I'm so thankful we had a full week to get right back to learning and fun!

Here are some of the things we did:

In Math: 
  • Practiced solving 2 part questions using addition and subtraction
  • Took 2 timed facts tests and our Topic 9 test
  •  Began Topic 10 on place value up to 1,000
  • Practiced place value using hundreds, tens, and ones mentally and with manipulatives
  • Played a game with a partner practicing tens and ones
  • Wrote and solved number riddles

In Social Studies and Writing:
  • Researched facts using books about our individual continent 
  • Went to the computer lab to do research
  • Finalized the facts we want to include in our final reports
In Fundations and Reading:

  • Worked on the sounds of /e/ There are 6 sounds! 
  • Played trick words using gel boards and relay
  • Learned new vocabulary heal and speech
  • Learned about Homophones using Brain Pop Jr. and practiced words
  • Read Lionel and Amelia and A Friend Like Ed. They are both stories about mice who are best friends.  Used a Venn Diagram to compare both stories. They loved both!

Thank you so much for all the kitchen gadgets! We are still in need of items such as pans, pots, spatulas, tongs, etc. They are due on Friday, March 13th!
