Peek At The Week

Happy Halloween! We had a great week! I hope everyone has a fun and safe night!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·         Began Topic 4 on working with equal groups
·        Learned repeated addition (ex:4+4+4=12)
·        Learned about arrays to make equal rows and columns
·        Solved word problems using repeated addition
·        Halloween math with adding and skip counting

In Fundations and Reading

·        Practiced trick words using gel boards
·        Finished Unit 4
·        Learned 5 syllable rules to break words apart in Unit 5
·        Learned a new vocabulary word disrupt
·        Used Drawing Pad to make words on the iPad and mark the words
·        My groups read A Halloween Rhyme and we looked for rhyming words, nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We even wrote our own group Halloween poem. It was fun!
In Science:

·        Read and completed a tree booklet and read Are Trees Alive?
·        Read Tess’s Tree and Maple Trees before observing and sketching 3 types of leaves and seeds we find in Burlington. (Maple, Oak, and Pine)
·        Read aloud A Tree is Nice and made a list of why trees are great!
·        Went for a tree walk with Miss P and our iPads to examine and take pictures of parts. We’ll make an electronic book next week with the pictures!
·        Went over the study guide for next Friday’s tree test. Please help your child study!

In Writing:

We wrote creative spooky stories about a haunted house! They were good!

It’s been a busy week! We had fun showing our adjective pumpkins for the Vocbulary Parade today!

Peek At The Week

We had another great week of learning together! 
I can’t believe how quickly October has been going!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·        Thought about addition to 18 to solve subtraction problems
·        Reviewed subtraction strategies
·        Used ten frames to show how to subtract
·        Solved 2 part questions using addition and subtraction
·        Took our Topic 3 test

In Fundations and Reading
·        Learned about the suffix ed and it has 3 sounds, id/d/t
·        Reviwed how to use Raz Kids on the iPads
·        Played a game called Desk Pop to practice spelling words
·        Learned new vocabulary words
·        Used Magnabet to make words on the iPad
·        Learned about the suffix ed and it has 3 sounds, id/d/t
·        Finished reading Mr. Putter and Tabby Pick the Pears and Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon and reviewed beginning, middle, end.
In Science:

·        Reviewed the four seasons and made an apple tree seasonal poem
·        Read Tell Me Tree by Gail Gibbons and learned about the parts of an oak tree
·        Watched a video about trees with a fun acorn named Pierre
·        Made an inner tree parts book
·        Had "Mr. Tree" dress up as the tree to review parts (They loved this!)

Today we also made adjective pumpkins for our vocabulary parade on Halloween! 
They came out very well. You’ll see them on the blog next week.

We also listened to a cute story with our 5th grade buddies and made pumpkins together.


**Reminder**: The Family Tree Project posters are due on Tuesday, October 28th. Thank you for turning them in as they’re completed. They are looking good!

Peek At The Week

I hope you had a nice Monday holiday with your son or daughter! Our four day week was still filled with tons of learning and fun!
Here are some of the things we have been working on:


In Math:


·        Learned to play Minus 1 or 2 Bingo
·        Subtracted 0, 1, and 2
·        Practiced subtraction using doubles facts to help us
·        Used Reflex Math on the iPads to practice facts (I sent logins home)
·        Thought of addition to ten to help us subtract


In Fundations and Reading
·        Learned about suffixes s, es, ing, ed, er, and est to make plurals
·        Practiced our trick words using gel boards
·        Played a game called Desk Pop to practice spelling words
·        Practiced words with closed syllable exceptions on white boards
·        Began reading Mr. Putter and Tabby Pick the Pears and Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon and discussed making connections and practiced answering questions in complete sentences.
In Science:


·        Reviewed the two types of trees- deciduous and evergreen
·        Read and highlighted important information and made a cool pop up trees


In Writing:
·        Edited our individual personal narratives with a partner
·        Began typing our stories on the iPads for publication


In Social Studies:


·        Learned about Christopher Columbus’ life
·        Made a fun, moveable puppet
·        Read a Scholastic Magazine about locating the Santa Maria ship


**Reminder: I sent home a special Family Tree Project for your child last week.

Peek At The Week

Each week keeps going by so fast! I have some hard working second graders!
Here are some of the things we have been working on:


In Math:


·        Used our tens skills with counters to add numbers
·        Played the game Rolling 3 numbers with 1 or 2 dice
·        Drew pictures to help us read tables and record number sentences
·        Took our Topic 2 test
·        Began Topic 3 on subtraction
·        Read a new math story
·        Played a subtraction game you can play at home!


In Fundations and Reading:

·        Learned about closed syllable exceptions (They have a long vowel sound)
·        Practiced our trick words using gel boards
·        Played a game called Desk Pop to practice spelling words
·        Practiced words with closed syllable exceptions on white boards
·        Finished Frog and Toad are Friends
In Science:
·        Began our new unit on trees
·        Discussed the two types-deciduous and evergreen
·        Learned why trees are useful and read Be A Friend to Trees
·        Read The Busy Tree and read about different kinds of trees


In Writing:
·        Wrote our beginning, middle, and end for our individual personal narrative
·        Added details and drew pictures


I sent home a special Family Tree Project for your child this week. Make sure you see the green paper that went home! The posters are due on Tuesday, October 28th. Please help them gather what they need. Also check important projects for samples.

Peek At The Week

We had another great week in second grade! I can’t believe it’s October!
Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:

·        Read the story Two of Everything  and created our own book of magic pot problems. Everything that goes into the pot gets doubled!
·        Played games Roll and Double, Double It, Double Arrays, Rolling 3 numbers
·        Added numbers with two numbers and discussed order
·        Learned about near doubles
·        Added numbers with 3 numbers to decide which to add first looking at tens, doubles, and near doubles first
In Fundations and Reading
·        Learned the word chunk
·        Practiced our trick words using gel boards
·        Played a game called Desk Pop to practice spelling words
·        Read “The Story” in Frog and Toad Are Friends and practiced sequencing
·        Read Lucky books and took our Unit 2 test
In Science:
·        Read Growing Frogs  which reviews the life cycle and is a personal narrative
·        Played Jeopardy to review for our test
·        Took our amphibian test (They did so great!)
·        Mr. Muscleman came and taught us pumpkin science. It was cool!

In Writing:
·        Finished our class book for our personal narratives on the first day
·        Began discussing an individual topic for our next personal narrative
·        Did noun activities for review
