Peek At The Week

Thanks for sending in all of the awesome family trees! They did a great job and we had fun learning and looking at the trees and answering questions.

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math: 
·  Used tens and ones to solve 2 digit addition problems
·   Used a break apart strategy and keeping the number whole
·        Used compensation to solve problems to get to the next ten
·        Learned a new game called Close to 20
·        Practiced ST Math and Reflex Math

In Fundations and Reading:
·        Learned about the 3 sounds of the suffix -ed
·        Discussed the words checked and swelled for vocabulary
·        Practiced skill sheets
·        Practiced categories of words for -ed with id, d, t sounds
·        Took our Unit 4 test

·        My reading group read A Halloween Rhyme- we practiced marking nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and we wrote our own poems too.

In Science:
·        Read Maple Trees, sang a Maple Tree song and answered diagram questions
·        Watched a short video about trees
·        Read books called Are Trees Alive?, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, and Tess's Tree
·        Learned the inner parts of the tree and their definitions by making a tree booklet
·        Learned about our families and did a museum walk with questions

In Writing:
·        We typed our personal narratives on the iPads for our final copies
·        Learned about homophones
Enjoy the weekend! Crazy Hat Day on Halloween and an important study guide for the tree test next Friday went home today! Please help your child study.

Peek At The Week

We a fun-filled week! I can't wait to see all of the family tree projects due next Thursday on October 27th.

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math: 
·   Reviewed for Topic 2 with a reteaching page
·   Played a new odd/even game
·        Took our Topic 2 test
·        Began Topic 3 with review and new vocabulary
·       Used the hundred chart to solve addition problems 
·       Used an open number line to solve addition problems with tens  
·       Used an open number line to solve addition problems with tens and ones  
·        Listened to a new math story about addition to color and solve
·       Practiced ST Math  

In Fundations and Reading:
·        Learned about new vowel teams and plural rules
·        Learned new suffixes to make plurals (s, es, ed, ing, er, and est)
·        Discussed the words thicker and softest for vocabulary
·        Practiced skill sheets
·        Practiced categories of words for s, es and ies
·        Learned to play trick word relay

·        My reading group read Grandpa Comes to Stay.

In Science:
·        Mr. Muscleman came and taught us about pumpkins and did a cool experiment
·        We learned that we needed fuel, oxygen, and heat energy to produce fire
·        Read a book called A Tree for All Seasons and made a tree life cycle
·         Read Tell Me Tree by Gail Gibbons and read a poem about an oak tree and color different parts

In Writing:
·        We began our individual personal narratives and used a planner to help us.
·        We wrote our beginnings, middles, and we are working on the ending.
·       Learned about contractions

We had our 2nd Friendship Circle Friday to share at least 1 good thing we liked about our week in school.

Peek At The Week




It was a fun Friday and some of the second grade teachers dress alike without planning it! :) We had a great week! I hope you all have seen the special family tree project due on October 27th. Also, book orders should be in by the 20th.

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math: 
·   Learned Even/Odd Numbers
·   Learned about rows, columns, and arrays
·        Drew arrays to solve word problems
·        Learned how to use arrays and bar diagrams as models
·       Practiced ST Math              

In Fundations and Reading:
·        Learned about closed syllable exceptions
·        Practiced trick words using gel boards
·        Discussed the words mind and bolt for vocabulary
·        Practiced skill sheets
·        Practiced alphabet aerobics-have your child show you!
·        Took our Unit 3 test and played a game called Desk Pop

·        My reading group finished reading Frog and Toad are Friends

In Science:
·        Read a book called The Busy Tree and did a fact and opinion page
·         Watched a video about trees
·         Read a Dr. Seuss tree book and made a cool pop up tree card comparing deciduous and evergreen trees

In Social Studies:


·        Learned about Christopher Columbus through reading, song, and videos

In Writing:
·        Discussed personal narratives ideas through "The Heart of our Writing"
·       Learned about synonyms (We sing Syno, Sameo, Synonyms are Similar)
We met with our 5th grade buddies and read about 2 special friends in our Scholastic Magazine.

We also started Friendship Circle Friday to share 2 things we liked about our week in school.

·       Learned new games called Even/Odd Smackdown and Tens in the Pool
·       Practiced ST Math              

In Fundations and Reading:
·        Learned about new glued sounds
·        Practiced trick words using gel boards-they love them!
·        Used Ipads for Dictation practice
·        Practiced dictation in our composition books
·        Practiced skill sheets
·        Practiced alphabet aerobics-have your child show you!
·        Took our Unit 2 test and played a game called Desk Pop


·        My reading group continued reading Frog and Toad are Friends

In Science:
·        Reviewed for our amphibian test by playing Jeopardy
·        Took our amphibian test (They did an amazing job!)
·        Began talking about trees for our next Science unit and how they are useful

In Social Studies:


·        Learned about author Kevin Henkes life and work as an author/illustrator

·        Miss F came in and did a lesson on kindness and how we should treat other people


In Writing:
·        Finished our personal narratives about the first day of school
·       Practiced marking adjectives, nouns, and verbs
·       Learned about antonyms (We sing Anto, Oppo, Antonyms are Opposites)
No school on Monday, so enjoy the long weekend!
