Peek At The Week

I hope you had a nice, long weekend with your family! This week flew by! We are gearing up for the big event next Friday! I can’t wait!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·         Used non standard measuring with paper clips
·         Measured items in the classroom with rulers in inches and centimeters for standard measurement
·         Measured using inches, feet and yards

In Reading:
·         Practiced sounds of oo, and u
·         Wrote words on the white boards to mark
·         Finished DRA testing in reading to check progress
·         Started The Gooey Chewy Contest and Silly Willy in groups

In Science:
·         Mr. Muscleman came to review our special sun, moon, and earth information
·         Played Jeopardy to review for our test
·         Wrote silly solar system stories
·         Took our test (Most did very well!)

In Writing:
·         Began learning about persuasive writing
·         Read I Wanna Iguana
·         Wrote letters to our parents to convince them to get us a pet we want. They are very convincing!

Reminder:
The Famous American Tea is coming on Friday June 6th at 9:00 a.m.!
Please RSVP if you haven’t yet, so I’ll know how many people are attending.

Also, please make sure the students are finalizing their scripts and costume ideas. The scripts and costumes must be turned in by Monday, June 2nd.

Don't forget to RSVP for The Famous American Tea!!!

Dear Parents,

Please send in your RSVP as soon as possible so I will know how many people to prepare for.
The Famous American Tea is on Friday, June 6th at 9:00 a.m. and at least one adult should represent each child. It is a great event and memory for second graders! I look forward to seeing you soon!

Peek At The Week

 

What a great week! We had a blast at the Harvard Museum of Natural History! We got to see so many fossils! Then we worked hard the rest of the week! Our time is moving way too fast!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·         Worked on whole and equal parts
·         Used reasoning to solve solid and plane shape riddles
·         Took our Topic 12 test and benchmark test for Topics 9-12
·         Started Unit 15 on measurement
·         Played a game with a partner

In Reading:
·         Finished Unit 14 in Fundations
·         Began Unit 15 on oo sounds
·         Practiced trick words with trick word relay
·         Wrote words on the white boards to mark
·         Began DRA testing in reading to check progress

In Science:
·         Finished fossils
·         Learned about the sun, moon, and earth
·         Made a craft to solve how the sun, moon, and earth are moving around
·         Watched videos and wrote facts about the earth, sun, and moon
·         Learned the 4 main phases of the moon
·         Read several books
·         Read packets on the earth, sun, and moon

We covered all the important information this week for the sun, moon, and earth. We will be having a test on Thursday, May 29th. A study guide is going home today, so please help your child study!

I hope everyone has a great long weekend—No school on Monday for Memorial Day.

Peek At The Week

I'm so glad the warmer weather is here, but Monday was a bit too hot!
Each week is flying by, but we are working so hard every single day!


Here are some of the things we have been working on:


In Math:
  • Used pattern blocks to create new shapes inside
  • Reviewed important vocabulary
  • Cut shapes apart to make new shapes
  • Learned that a square is a special kind of rectangle
  • Learned about rows and columns in rectangles
  • Counted squares within rectangles


In Fundations and Reading:


  • Learned new vocabulary noun and tower
  • Practiced ou, ow words on white boards
  • Pantomimed ou, ow sound words (This was fun!)
  • Played trick word relay
  • Read Aesop's Fables and Coral Reefs


In Science:
  • Began learning about fossils
  • Watched a video called All About Fossils
  • Read Fossils Tell of Long Ago and Fly Guy fossils books
  • Read more information on fossils in a packet
  • Started our sun, moon, and earth unit


In Writing/Social Studies:
  • Worked on completing our insect reports on IPads


***Reminders***
Our field trip to The Harvard Museum of Natural History in Cambridge is
this Monday 5/19. The students need to bring a bag lunch that is tree nut and peanut free. Thank you Mrs. Reardon and Mr. Hammond for volunteering!


Also, The Famous American Tea is Friday, June 6th! The students should have started researching their assigned famous american to complete their script by June 2nd. If you have questions or need costume ideas, please let me know. I can't wait to see them perform!

Peek At The Week

We had a great week of learning in second grade! May is a busy as a bee month! It was also teacher appreciation week! I’m glad I have so many sweet second graders who make my job fun!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:                                                        
·         Took our pre-test for Topic 12 on Geometry
·         Played a game to look for solid shapes
·         Discussed and learned a lot of new vocabulary such as
Flat surfaces, faces, vertices, edges, quadrilaterals, polygons, and angles
·         Read a book called Solid Shapes
·         Played a center game to discuss solid shape attributes
·         Used pattern blocks to look at sides, angles, and vertices
·         Had a plane shape and solid shape scavenger hunt in our classroom

In Fundations and Reading
·         Took our last IReady test
·         Began Unit 14 on ow, ou sounds
·         Played TWINGO for trick word practice
·         Read Aesop’s Fables and Coral Reefs

In Science:
·         Researched and started our IPad reports on a special insect in the computer lab
·         Played insect Jeopardy
·         Read about Lightning Bugs and looked for text features
·         Took our insect test (They did very well!)
·         Played Roll A Bug

In Writing:
·         Made a special poem for Mother’s Day (I think you’ll like it!)

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers! I’ll have my first one with Asher!

Peek At The Week

Wow! Vacation ends and we’re right back to hard work!
I can’t believe it is May already!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·         Reviewed adding and subtracting with regrouping 3 digit numbers
·         Practiced riddle clues to add two numbers together
·         Reviewd even and odd numbers
·         Completed our Topic 11 test
·         Practiced using a calculator to add numbers

In Fundations and Reading:
·         Week 2 of Unit 13 for the sounds of long o.
·         Read Played TWINGO for trick words
·         Learned 2 new words follow and foamy
·         Practiced dictation
·         Finished The Gooey Chewy Contest and Elephants

In Science:
·         Built our own bug pictures
·         Learned about complete and incomplete metamorphosis cycles
·         Watched All About Butterflies
·         Compared moths and butterflies using a Venn Diagram
·         Had a Butterfly Scavenger hunt for facts with a partner

In Writing:
·         Practiced paragraph writing for homework
·         Finished our continent books

*I am sending home an insect study guide today for our test on Wednesday May 7th. Please help your child study.

*Also, we are going on a field trip on May 19th. There is a yellow form in the backpack folder. The cost is $11. Please send in cash only.
