Peek At The Week

We had another great week of learning together! I feel like the days are flying by so quickly!

Here are some things we did:

In Math

  • Worked on skip counting
  • Learned vocabulary words compare and order
  • Compared numbers for greater than and less than or equal to
  • Ordered numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least
  • Looked for patterns in number sequences
In Fundations:
  • Worked on 2 syllable words with long e
  • Learned the words greedy and valley
  • Practiced long e words together
  • Played trick word relay
  • Took our Unit 11 test
I got to have my whole class during reading time this week and we did a lot of fun things!

  • Read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and wrote our own silly storm stories. They were very funny! We will share them next week.
  • Reviewed homophones and read Dear, Deer
  • Made a class homophone book
  • Learned about Cynthia Rylant who is the author of Henry and Mudge books
  • Partner read The First Book and completed information about the story
  • Reviewed verbs by singing or song and highlighting verb words
  • Made an ABC verb book
In Science:
  • Learned about temperature 
  • Watched a Brain Pop Jr. video
  • Practiced recording the temperature together
  • Did a fun experiment with water and ice
  • Read about tornadoes and hurricanes 
  • Read about cool clouds
  • Went over the study guide for our upcoming test 4/2
In Social Studies/Writing
  • Continued researching our special continents to make our own reports
Our weather test is on Wednesday April 2nd. Please help your child study!
Also, more snacks are needed for the basket! 
Thursday April 3rd we will be having our field trip to see Henry and Mudge Live!
If you could send in the report card folders too, that would be wonderful!

Peek At The Week

Happy spring! What a great week we had in second grade! I am so ready for the nicer weather to come quickly!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:

In Math:
·        Began Unit 10 counting numbers up to 1,000!
·        Learned place value for hundreds, tens, and ones
·        Learned new vocabulary words- standard form (514), expanded form (500+10+4=514), and number word (five hundred fourteen)
·        Played a dinosaur game using tens and ones
·        Learned about subtracting or adding 100 or 10.
·        Finished a number crossword

In Fundations and Reading:
·        Week 1 of Unit 11 on the sounds of e
·        Read The Lad Who Went to the North Wind and Elephants
·        Played TWINGO for trick words
·        Learned 2 new words speech and heal
·        Practiced dictation

In Science:
·        Learned about 4 severe storms- tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, and thunderstorms.
·        We made a cool weather cookbook to help us remember

In Writing:
·        Researched facts at the computer lab about our special continent
·        Wrote facts with our group members
·        Wrote a friendly letter to our parents about our week (Look for it in the  backpack folder!) J

We are still in need of snacks for our basket.

Peek At The Week

We had another busy week in second grade! Sometimes I think I need to wear roller-skates at school to keep up with everything!

Here are some of the things we did this week:

In Math:

  • Used mental math and paper and pencil to solve subtraction problems
  • Learned about two parts questions using addition and subtraction
  • Took our Topic 9 test 
  • Took our pre-test for Topic 10
  • Played a games counting tens or ones
In Fundations:
  • Learned new vocabulary words delay and complain
  • Learned new homophones
  • Practiced dictation using white boards and composition books
  • Completed Unit 10 with our test

In Writing/ Social Studies:
  • We read our completed our class book n North America
  • Wrote about what we think we know about the next special continent each student is researching in groups
  • Began researching and recording facts in our notebooks
In Science:
  • Reviewed the 3 types clouds by watching a cloud video
  • Learned the four types of precipitation: rain, snow, sleet and hail
  • Made a small booklet to help with definitions
  • Watched a precipitation video and recorded facts

We have our special Toast to Memorial Fundraiser beginning again! Mrs. Nelson and I are doing a "Snack Attack" basket. Each child should bring in one snack to add to the basket.  So far we have only 4 or 5 snacks. Thanks for contributing!

Peek At The Week

We had a great start to the month of March! I hope we see signs of spring soon!

Here are some of the things we did this week:

In Math:
  • Used models to subtract two digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • Played a math game with cubes to help with regrouping tens and ones
  • Learned to use the number line to help us subtract
  • Solved addition facts to check our subtraction
In Fundations:
  • Began Unit 10 on long a sounds ai and ay
  • Learned new trick words
  • Practiced making words with magnetic tiles and writing 
  • Practiced trick words by playing trick word relay
In Writing/ Social Studies:

  • Edited our facts for our class report on North America
  • Learned about adding a table of contents, illustrations, labels, and captions to our writing
  • Completed our class book report on North America. It looks great! They worked hard!
In Science:
  • Read about weather and answered questions
  • Reviewed the water cycle
  • Learned the 3 main types of clouds: cirrus, cumulus, stratus
  • Made a cloud booklet and learned a cloud song

Our class has earned 50 compliments! I'm so proud! As a class reward, they voted to have stuffed animal day on Monday 3/10. Please help them remember their stuffed animal for Monday.

Field Trip Reminder- Students should bring in their permission slip and $10 cash for our field trip. Thank you for those who turned it in already!

Peek At The Week

The week went by so fast after a nice week off! 

Here are some of the things we did this week:

In Math:
  • Began Topic 9 on subtraction
  • Took a pretest and read a subtraction story
  • Learned about regrouping tens and ones with cubes
  • Learned about regrouping with paper and pencil
In Fundations:
  • Finished up Unit 9 using er, ir, ur
  • Practiced trick words by playing trick word relay
  • Learned vocabulary words thirsty and return

In Writing/ Social Studies:

  • Went to the computer lab to do research
  • Learned about adding adjectives to our facts
  • Used linking words to combine facts into better sentences
In Science:
  • Began our unit on weather
  • Discussed what we know
  • Made a cool folder
  • Learned about the water cycle
  • Made a water cycle wheel
  • Watched a water cycle video and wrote 2 facts
We celebrated Dr. Seuss day on Friday and had a special guest reader from the high school! We also read about Dr. Seuss with our 5th grade reading buddies.
