Peek At The Week

Brrrr! What a very cold week we had! I would rather have some snow than this frigid weather!

In Math, we finished Unit 3 discussing tens and ones using sticker strips and place value. We have started Unit 9 on Measurement. We talked about different things we measure and I read them a couple of great stories. One book was How Big Is A Foot?
The students understood that we have to use standard measuring so that things will come out right, so one foot is equal to 12 inches. We also watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on inches and feet and used some body benchmarks to measure. We will be doing some more measuring in our classroom next week. It is always fun for them!

In Social Studies, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and the difference between fact and opinion. We also worked on cardinal directions by working on map directions with a partner. We also did a really fun Beanie Baby activity using cardinal directions on a grid. The kids landed on a space and then they get to take care of the Beanie Baby for a week. They were so excited! I’ll take a group shot next week so you can see them.

In Writing, we worked on leader/ follower sentences based on the topic “The Perfect Snow Day”.  We brainstormed ideas together as well as topic and closing sentences. They did an amazing job getting started! We will continue to work on editing and do the final drafts next week. I can’t wait to read them!

P.S. Our maps and globes test is on Wednesday 1/30. Please help your child study.

I hope you all have a great weekend and stay warm!

Peek At The Week

Another week completed, but I am missing many of my poor sick students!
I am hoping to see all my second grade stars next Tuesday!

In Math, we practiced counting using different numbers. We worked with a partner showing towers of twos, fives, and tens and filled in a table. We also looked at tens and ones problems and practiced combination cards with 10. We played Collect 50 cents to review our money trading skills too. We will wrap up this Unit next week and begin Unit 9 on measurement.

In Social Studies, we went to the computer lab to label the special 7 continents and 5 oceans. The students all did a great job! We learned 2 special songs to help us remember all the continents and oceans. We also learned about cardinal directions. We used a mnemonic device called Nothing, Ever, Scares, Wanda (North, East, South, and West). Wanda is a scary witch and we created a paper compass with her on it. They are fun to use to learn directions!

In Writing, we learned about diamante poems. We wrote an antonym one comparing winter to summer. We brainstormed ideas and then they chose what words they liked best. They came out well and you can see them in their backpack folders.

There is no school on Monday 1/21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I hope to see everyone on Tuesday!

Have a great weekend and stay warm!

Peek At The Week

Another fast week of learning! I have been feeling a little under the weather and I know a lot of my students are too. I was glad to have this weekend to recover a little bit.

In Math, we played Collect 50 cents where the students need to trade coins and be the first one to collect 50 cents on the nose. They play with a partner. We also discussed even and odd numbers and counted the number of legs and fingers in our classroom. They solved problems by counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s also.

In Writing, we reviewed leader/follower sentences so everyone would know what to write for homework. I think they are getting the hang of it!

In Social Studies, we watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on maps and created a “Where I Live” booklet. We also went over 7-5-4-2. We learned about 7 continents, 5 oceans, 4 hemispheres and 2 poles. We colored a world map with all the continents and oceans.

In Science, we have a special bear exhibit from the science center visiting our school. We went to see it on Thursday and worked with a partner to answer questions about different bears. It was fun!

On Friday, we had a great time watching “Martha Speaks” at the Chelmsford Performing Arts Center.  *See Fun Photos

Many of the kids were feeling sick on Friday, so I hope they are feeling a little better. We talked about washing our hands more often while singing the ABC song twice and using hand sanitizer to stop the spread of germs.

Peek At The Week

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful time with your family!
I had a great time with my family in North Carolina. The traveling is always tiring, but it was very rewarding to see my family.

We had a short week, but it was great!

In Math, we continued working on story problems and started discussing even and odd numbers to make pairs or teams.

In Social Studies, we began our unit on maps and globes. We used a Venn diagram to compare the similarities and differences between maps and globes.

In Writing, we began writing our New Year’s Resolutions for 2013. The students came up with some great goals and we will hang them above their lockers as a reminder and for others to see.

Also, we worked on Leader/Follower sentences. This will help the students with their homework because it will be changing starting tomorrow. There is a special note for you to read about the changes attached to their packet.

Stay warm!
