Peek At The Week

The month of May went by very quickly! I can’t believe it will be June tomorrow! The weather is certainly telling us that summer is near!

In Math, we worked on solving addition story problems using multiple strategies. The students are getting very good with tens and ones and showing different strategies for the same problem. The students also played some review games with a partner to practice adding and money skills.
Next week, we’ll work on hundreds, tens, and ones with stickers and story problems.

In Science, we learned a lot about the moon. We read about the moons in different months, read a moon packet and watched a short video called All about the Moon. We learned the four main phases of the moon too. They are new moon, first quarter moon, full moon, and last quarter. We also read The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons. The students enjoyed writing and sharing funny solar system stories too! We had a great laugh together!  I sent home the study guide for our test next Wednesday 6/5.

In Writing, we wrote expository pieces about a classmate. Each student interviewed another student in class and then wrote an informative paragraph about the person. It was fun learning about someone in class and the writing was fantastic! We’ll share them next week.

*Check the backpack folder notice regarding a special spirit week starting on Monday. Each day has a different theme, so it should be fun! Monday will be Pajama Day!

*Reminder*
The Famous American Tea scripts are due on June 10th and the costumes on June 11th. Please help your child prepare their script for this special event!

Enjoy this lovely hot weather! J

Peek At The Week

I really love my second graders! I am already getting sad to see the school days dwindling! They were working hard this week as always!

In Math, we worked on pinching paper clips to help us subtract from 100. We learned 2 strategies to help us solve 100 problems. We also practiced keeping the number whole to solve subtraction story problems. They are doing phenomenal! I am very impressed with their progress! We’ll work on addition strategies next week.

In Science, we started learning about the special characteristics of the sun, moon, and earth. The students knew a lot already, which is great! We read some great non-fiction books about the topic and the reason for the seasons. We also saw short videos called All About the Earth and All About the Sun.
We will learn about the marvelous moon next week.

In Writing, we began writing persuasive pieces about what makes Memorial School the best! We brainstormed some great ideas as a class. There were a lot of reasons! I would write about how great my students are!

*Special Project Alert!*
The second graders have been assigned a famous American to research. All of the information will be found in the Backpack Folders today. This is a very special and memorable second grade event. Please check the folder for the information.

I hope you have a great long weekend! I’ll see the students on Tuesday, 5/28.

Peek At The Week

The time keeps flying by! We had another wonderful week!

In Math, we finished our fractions unit and started Unit 8 which reviews partners and teams, even and odd numbers and story problems. We learned a new game called Plus 9 or 10 Bingo too.

In Science, we started learning about fun fossils. We read a cool story and watched a video called All About Fossils. We also learned a ton about them and got to see and touch some at The Harvard Museum of Natural History.

In Social Studies, we completed our unit on Mexico by making a mini book, learning and comparing one Mexican student’s life to our own, creating the country’s flag, and even learned some Spanish colors and numbers! We also learned about a famous artist named Diego Rivera who was a muralist. We made our own classroom picture mural of things we learned from this year! It came out really well!

I hope you enjoy the weekend with your family!

Peek At The Week

This week flew by, but we had a great time learning together!

In Math, we made some very cute fraction caterpillars with a pattern. We also learned about mixed number fractions when dividing an odd number. We sorted fractions into groups. We also colored some fraction flags and labeled them appropriately. They are doing very well with fun fractions!

In Science, we played Jeopardy to review for the insect test. I can tell the students studied hard for the test! We also presented our awesome insect reports. They came out very well!

In Social Studies, we have started learning about the country of Mexico. We watched a geography video and a Brain Pop Jr. introduction video about Mexico’s holidays. We also made an awesome map.

In Writing, we wrote a very special poem for Mother’s Day! They came out very well and I can tell that each student definitely shares a special bond with their mom! I hope you like the poem and gift! I also hope all of the mothers get to be pampered this weekend!

Thank you for all of those who sent in the extra field trip money. I still have a few who need to send in $6.25 as soon as possible. I appreciate it!

I hope you enjoy the weekend with your family and this nice weather lasts!

Peek At The Week

Wow! It’s May already! How did that happen? Time flies when you’re working with great second graders like the ones in my class!

In Math, we began learning about fun fractions. We read Eating Fractions and learned a fraction jingle to help with the numerator and denominator. We also worked on splitting halves with balloons and pennies. We watched two awesome Brain Pop Jr. videos to help us too! The kids are doing really well with fractions so far! We also got to use the Ipads today to play some fun fact games such as Math Bingo and Dino Math, since we earned another 25 compliments! We have earned 125 so far for the year! That is amazing!

In Science, we learned more about interesting insects. We learned about the complete metamorphosis, which is egg, larva, pupa, adult. We also learned about an incomplete metamorphosis, which is egg, nymph, adult. We made some life cycle crafts to help us. We also watched a video All About Butterflies and Moths. We also read about them together and used a Venn Diagram to compare them.  We got to experience what compound eyes are like by borrowing some special insect glasses from Mrs. Siegel.

In Writing, we wrote a friendly letter to you about our week. The students are continuing to practice adding more details to their writing. Look for their lovely letters in their backpack folders today!

The whole school attended a special volleyball game on Thursday morning for the 5th graders and the teachers! The 5th graders won, but it was a good time for everyone!
