Brrrr! What a very
cold week we had! I would rather have some snow than this frigid weather!
In Math, we
finished Unit 3 discussing tens and ones using sticker strips and place value.
We have started Unit 9 on Measurement. We talked about different things we
measure and I read them a couple of great stories. One book was How Big Is A
Foot?
The students understood that
we have to use standard measuring so that things will come out right, so one
foot is equal to 12 inches. We also watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on inches and
feet and used some body benchmarks to measure. We will be doing some more
measuring in our classroom next week. It is always fun for them!
In Social Studies,
we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and the difference between
fact and opinion. We also worked on cardinal directions by working on map
directions with a partner. We also did a really fun Beanie Baby activity using
cardinal directions on a grid. The kids landed on a space and then they get to
take care of the Beanie Baby for a week. They were so excited! I’ll take a
group shot next week so you can see them.
In Writing, we
worked on leader/ follower sentences based on the topic “The Perfect Snow Day”. We brainstormed ideas together as well as
topic and closing sentences. They did an amazing job getting started! We will
continue to work on editing and do the final drafts next week. I can’t wait to
read them!
P.S. Our maps and
globes test is on Wednesday 1/30. Please help your child study.
I hope you all
have a great weekend and stay warm!
