Field Trip Postponed!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm sad to say that our field trip is cancelled for tomorrow, but it will be postponed for a later date!
I will let you know when that will be as soon as I find out! It will be a regular work day tomorrow!

Peek At The Week

Reminders:
  • Field Trip: Thursday, January 29th

Here's a look at our week! January is flying by!

In Math:
  • Students used models to add to a 2-digit number and a 2-digit number
  • Took our Symphony test on the iPads
  • Practiced place value with hundreds, tens, and ones
  • Students set up and solved a 2 digit number and another 2 digit number to see if regrouping needs to happen
  • Played a new game called "High Roller" with a partner to practiced adding and subtracting
In ELA:
  • Learned r-controlled sounds: ir, ur, er
  • Practiced dictation with white boards
  • Learned verb and squirm as words of the day
  • Practiced trick words using chalkboard app and gel boards
  • Discussed and created a non-fiction features flap book to look at the parts that can occur when reading non-fiction texts.
In Social Studies:
  • Learned about Martin Luther King Jr.'s  life
  • Watched a Brain Pop Jr. video and read a Scholastic Magazine
  • Discussed fact vs. opinion
  • Played Jeopardy to review for the test
  • Took our maps, globes, and landforms test
In Writing:
  • Wrote a diamante poem comparing winter and summer

Peek At The Week

Reminders:

Here's a look at our week!

In Math:
  • Started Topic 8: Adding 2-digit numbers
  • Heard a story about addition and played a game together
  • Students used models to add to a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number
  • Used concrete models to add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number and decided if regrouping was needed
  • Students added a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number, regrouped if necessary, and then recorded the process in a vertical addition frame
In ELA:
  • learned r-controlled sounds: /or/ /ar/
  • Students took Unit 8 fundations test
  • Took our iReady test
  • Read Rosie's Story and Wonderful Winter
In Social Studies:
  • Learned cardinal directions and made a compass
  • Practiced map skills with Royal Castle directions
  • Practiced map skills with a Map Attack packet
  • Introduced landforms and bodies of water
  • Watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on landforms
  • Made a booklet of definitions
  • Learned about map grid directions and got to land on a special beanie baby spot that they can take care of for a week! We had fun with this activity! Ask your child to explain it!
A special study guide went home for our test on maps, globes, and landforms on Thursday, January 22nd! Please help your child study!

Happy New Year!

 
Our first week back after vacation went by really FAST!
Here is a peek at our week:
In Math:
  • Learned how to find the missing part of 100 by counting up using a hundred chart
  • Used the hundred chart to subtract 2- digit numbers
  • Used mental math strategies to subtract multiples of 10
  • Identified extra information and missing information in word problems
  • Took Topic 7 Test---every student did very well! :)
In ELA:
  • Read about New Year's around the world and answered questions
  • Wrote our New Year's resolutions
  • Practiced making words 
  • Took Unit 7 Fundations Test
In Social Studies:
  • Learned the differences between maps and globes by doing a fun coin activity
  • Read Me On The Map and There's A Map on My Lap
  • Learned 7-5-4-2 for the 7 continents, 5 oceans, 4 hemispheres and 2 poles
  • Sang a continents and oceans song
  • Named the 7 continents by looking at a map and colored a word map with continents and oceans
  • Students drew their own maps of our classroom
  • Watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on continents and countries and maps 

In Writing:

We wrote our New Year's Resolutions. They came up with great ideas!

I hope you all had a nice vacation. Thank you for turning in the field trip money for our field trip on January 29th. I'll pick chaperones soon!

Also, our homework is changing next week. Your child is aware of this and we are practicing leader/follower sentences using our Fundations words.

Happy Holidays and Have a Wonderful Winter Vacation

It's been a crazy month! December always moves so quickly and then it will be 2015!!
We have been busy bees in Room 206 working on subtracting, writing about our homes in December and learning about different holidays. The students did an excellent job with the Secret Pal event!
They had so much fun exchanging compliments and gifts! It was a really fun thing to do and they truly came up with some creative gifts for one another! Thank you for all of your help!
I hope you have a terrific vacation time with your family and friends. Thank you for all your gifts.

Peek At The Week

We had a great week and a fantastic time at The Discovery Museum. Ask your child to tell you about the cool water challenge they had to do in a group. It was not easy!

Here are some of the things we have been working on:
In Math:
  • Students added using the hundred chart
  • Students mentally added a two digit number to multiples of ten
  • Students looked for patterns in tables and questions to solve
  • Took our Topic 6 test
  • Practiced facts on Reflex
In Fundations:
  • Began Unit 7 on open syllables
  • Learned vocabulary word -shy
  • Practiced dictation with sounds and words
  • Played Desk Pop to practice spelling
  • Learned how “y” can have the sounds of e or i at the end of 2 syllable words
In Reading:
  • Working on DRAs to determine students new reading levels and new groupings

In Science:
  • Read All About Snakes and make a long snake filled with information
  • Made a 6 super snakes booklet
  • Learned the 5 Burlington Reptiles and made a booklet
  • Presented our reptile reports to the class (They did a great job!

*A study guide went home yesterday for your child’s reptile test on Tuesday, Dec. 16th. Please help your child study!

Also, be on the lookout for more information regarding our Secret Pal activity. I can’t wait to see what they can create!

Peek At The Week

I can’t believe it’s December! I can feel the energy in the air! It was so great to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress. I am proud to be their teacher! Thank you for your continued support and partnership. I couldn't do it without you!


Here are some of the things we have been working on:


In Math:
  • Students mentally added 10 to two digit numbers
  • New vocabulary: mental math, tens digit, next ten
  • Students mentally added a two digit number to a one digit number
  • Students mentally added a two digit number to another two digit number
  • Reviewed place value for tens and ones
  • Used tens rods, counters, and tens frames to help us
In Fundations:
  • Learned the exception rule for a v-e syllable, -ive for give and also the suffix -ive
  • Learned vocabulary word -adjective
  • Practiced dictation with sounds and words
  • Played Desk Pop to practice spelling
  • Took our Unit 6 test
In Reading:

  • Read about Shortcut by Donald Crews
  • Practiced a Hokey Pokey song about summarizing
  • Worked on summarizing a story together using a flip chart and then writing a paragraph

In Science:
  • Read about lizards
  • Compared lizards and salamanders using a Venn Diagram
  • Read about alligators and crocodiles
  • Compared alligators and crocodiles using a Venn Diagram

In Writing:
  • Read a book called Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree
  • Wrote a book review to convince others why they should read the book too! It was fun!
  • Students chose a book and wrote their own book reviews

Reptile reports and pictures are due on Monday! Please help your child finalize their facts and pictures.
